Hope Defer’d – Brighton

(this is a very small original imagesee note on image sizes)

Unrecorded engraving – possibly by Robert Cruikshank.

Cruikshank published a Comic Sketch of Brighton in 1830 (seven wood engravings) the title page of which featured very similar ‘to let’ signs. By 1826 George IV had ceased to visit the town and fairly early on in Victoria’s reign she also gave up visiting, so this scene could relate to the townsfolk wondering who from the Royal Family might come to live in the Pavilion, and when.
