Interior View of Brighton Royal Chain Pier

BPC00071

Aquatint engraving by and after John Bruce, and published by the artist as plate 4 in his Select Views of Brighton, 1829.

The Chain Pier was such an attraction for artists that 171 known prints were published of the structure (most of them before 1840), of which 31 are from the pier head looking landwards. This is the only print where the publisher uses the strange phrase in the title The Interior of . . .  The paper of this print is watermarked J. Whatman 1824.

Images of Brighton 299 and illustrated on page 73.
