Chain Pier (detail)

BPC00481

This image is a detailed view taken from BPC00087

A detail from W H Mason’s aquatint of the Chain Pier, published in 1838.

A view of the wooden steps that took Chain Pier subscribers from the clifftop on Marine Parade to the eastern pedestrian entrance. Just behind the steps is a close-up view of the lounge building and camera obscura at the entrance to the pier itself, with the Albion Hotel in the background.

These steps on the chalk cliffs started opposite the New Steyne, and can clearly be seen on the print Chain Pier & Bazaar from the Beach, Brighton BPC00077.
