(this is a very small original imagesee note on image sizes)

Steel engraving by Rock & Co, London. Unusually for Rock, this is dated 5 October 1863.

The Square was built between 1807 and 1818.

The publisher of this engraving, William Frederick Rock (1802-1890) from Barnstaple in Devon, became the successful London publisher of thousands of views of Victorian towns, villages and houses. He was a generous patron of artists in Devon, gave bequests to Greenwich, where he lived, and gave Rock Park, by the River Taw, to Barnstaple. Rock Park is a large parkland area, now with a sports ground, tennis courts, bowls and a war memorial. It was opened in 1879 and is now owned by Barnstaple Town Council. Barnstaple Museum is housed in The Athenaeum, a handsome building given to the town by Rock in 1888, together with a bequest of £12,000.
