Brighton from the Chain Pier

BPC00070

Steel engraving from Allen’s History of the Counties of Surrey & Sussex, published by I T Hinton, 1829.

This was a very successful image, with a second edition published by Edward Lacey in 1830, and then a subsequent edition without any publication line.

Just to the right of the tall packet ship funnel is the Albion Hotel. Just near the top of the funnel, in the distance can be seen St Nicholas Church, and on the left-hand edge is the red-brick circular building that was Lamprell’s Royal Baths. These were Brighton’s first swimming baths, in a building that became known locally as ‘The Bunion’. On the right-hand edge, the gap in the line of seafront buildings is the New Steine.

Illustrated in Brighton in Diaries by Paul K Lyons. The History Press, 2011. Illustrated on page 99.
