Chain Pier, Brighton

BPC00090

(this is a very small original imagesee note on image sizes)

Steel plate line engraving by W Read. Published by G B Whittaker c1825. This is the second edition: the first has the title Chain Pier, Brighton, from the sands at low tide and has the line ‘Drawn and published by E. Burr, bookbinder, 25 St. John Street, Brighton’. There are 15 recorded views of the pier from the east, and over 30 views from the west. The views from the west, taking in the whole of Marine Parade, together with the pier entrance gates and the curved promenade up to the land end of the pier itself, were far more dramatic and architecturally interesting scenes than these views from the east.
