Wood engraving from Old Brighton, Old Preston, Old Hove by Frederick Harrison and James North. Published 14 Market Street, Brighton, 1937. In the foreword the authors express their thanks to Messrs Hanningtons for the ‘loan of a block, No 3 North Street’.
Laurie Keen in the Argus Magazine of 16 July 2016 writes that Smith Hannington came from a Shoreham brewery family and at 14 was apprenticed to a drapery company in Brighton. By 23 he had acquired 3 North Street, by 1816 he obtained a Royal Warrant and by 1824 had moved to a new building next door, 4 North Street.
