The Chain Pier, Brighton

BPC00082

Steel engraving by J S & Co, and numbered 1512 in the publisher’s reordering catalogue.

If they are published undated, Chain Pier prints can be given approximate dates from the arched entrances. Originally there were none, then in the 1830s the central gate was arched over (saying ‘subscriber’s entrance’). By the late 1840s the other gate farthest from the entrance hut was also given an arch.
