Wood engraving – artists unknown. First published in An Illustrated Hand-Book of Brighton and its Environs by Charles Fleet, 1847, page 86. Fleet writes ‘The Dyke-road is remarkable for the number of windmills which border it, and which give a peculiar character to the scenery, as portrayed in the following cut.’ The view was then re-engraved and re-published in Old Brighton, Old Preston, Old Hove by F Harrison and J S North, 1937, p 166.
The roadway in front of the mills portrays the Dyke-road as a simple dirt-track, probably difficult to use in winter.
